  PDF Help

Some of the plenary notes are available in the form of Adobe Acrobat files, more commonly referred to as PDF documents.

To view these files you must install the Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer. The Adobe Acrobat Reader is available free of charge from Adobe's website. It is recommended that you use the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader and only download it from Adobe's website.

Problems have been experienced by some people when accessing pdf documents. This can be due to a number of reasons.

Typical problems include the browser window freezing or the pdf file opening as a blank page. This is usually due to the integration of your browser and Adobe Reader. Large pdf file sizes can also cause problems.

The following may assist if you are experiencing these difficulties:

Check your software

Check the version number of Adobe Reader on your computer. If the version number is lower than Version 4, an upgrade to the latest version of Adobe Reader is highly recommended and available free of charge from Adobe's website.

To check the version number of Adobe Reader:

  • Open Acrobat Reader
  • Select Help > About
  • The version number of Adobe Reader will display
  • Check the version number of your browser. If the version number of your browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape) is lower than Version 4, an upgrade to the latest browser version is highly recommended.

To check the version number of your browser:

  • Open your browser
  • Select Help > About
  • The version number of your browser will display

How to save a PDF file to your computer

PDF files can be downloaded to your computer from a web page without being opened in the browser window. You can then copy text, print the file or save the file to a disk. This is recommended for large pdf documents. To download a PDF file from a link:

  • Right-click the link to a PDF file, and then choose Save Target As (Internet Explorer) or Save Link As (Netscape Navigator) from the pop-up menu
  • In the Save As dialog box, select a location on your computer and click Save.

PDF printing problems

Some people experience problems viewing or printing PDF documents, especially lengthy ones. If this happens, it is advised that you save the document to your computer and view/print it from there rather than through your browser window.

If this doesn't help, you may need to download and install the latest version of Adobe Reader from Adobe's website.

Run Adobe Reader in a separate window from Internet Explorer

Disable browser integration:

  • Open Adobe Reader
  • Go to File > Preferences > General
  • In the Options section, uncheck the Browser Integration box
  • Click OK then exit from Adobe Reader
  • Restart Internet Explorer
